Symptoms: Children-Colic

Do You Have A Colicky Baby?

Having a colicky baby can be stressful on both the child and parents. The child’s tummy hurts. You have a terrible headache. Neither of you can sleep and you’re both cranky. And the child can’t ask for help because they’re only two weeks old! So, they cry. And cry. And cry.

Crying in babies isn’t anything new and almost all babies do it. However, when a baby is colicky the crying can be ceaseless. Parents who have a colicky baby are usually so sleep deprived that they can barely hold on to their sanity. Watching any baby cry without being able to help is hard, but when it is your own it is literally one of the hardest things in the world.

More than just Indegestion?

Infantile colic was first thought to be merely indigestion. However, the most widely accepted definition of colic today is “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.”

Birth Trauma?

If a baby won’t stop crying, it’s hard to know if it’s a digestive disturbance causing the colic or something else. Let’s consider another explanation. When we examine a newborn infant, we often find spinal distortions in the baby’s upper cervical spine. These babies are probably suffering from head and neck pain. This is especially common if there was a difficult birth.

A 67% reduction in crying

In the October 1999, there was a study done by the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics on a small group of 50 infants. Half of the children received the drug dimethicone to treat symptoms of colic and the other half received spinal manipulation. When the study was all said and done, the babies being adjusted saw a 67% reduction in crying and the drug therapy group saw a 38% reduction. That’s nearly twice as good!
