Disc injuries range from mild to severe and can be an acute or a chronic issue. Regardless of the severity or duration you’ve had the problem it’s critical that you deal with it promptly to avoid more permanent damage. This article is designed for you to obtain a better knowledge of the various symptoms disc injuries can cause and what we can do at Thrive Health Center to get you out of pain and potentially help get long term correction.

What is a disc?

Discs or Intervertebral Discs are small circular pads that fit between your vertebras in the spine and act as a shock absorber for your spine. Each disc has a tough outer layer or ring and a soft gel like center.

Disc Injuries

If you are diagnosed with or have a protruding or bulging disc it means that the gel like center is pushing outward, this can result in pinching or irritation of the nerves which can be extremely painful.

If you have been diagnosed with or have a disc herniation it means that disc has been damaged to the point where the gel like center pushes outward. This can put direct pressure on nerves and surrounding structures in the area causing extreme pain in some cases as well as numbness and burning radiating down the legs.

The last two types of disc injuries are called a disc extrusion and sequestration, these two injuries mean the outer layer of the disc has torn, letting the gel like center balloon out into the spinal canal. This can cause direct pressure on the surrounding nerves as well as the spinal cord. This can be very serious in some cases.

How Chiropractic Can Help

Adjustments: Chiropractic adjustments help to restore proper movement and function to the vertebra above and below the disc issue. By restoring motion, the disc gets the nutrition that it needs to prevent further degeneration.  Adjustments will also help to relieve some of that pressure or irritation that is affecting your nervous system and causing you pain.

Spinal Decompression: We also offer spinal decompression for our patients who have disc issues. Traditional Spinal Decompression therapy required surgery or other invasive methods to correct and treat the problem. However, at Thrive Health Center we now offer non-surgical spinal decompression that gently and accurately targets the specific disc(s) that is an issue. By doing this we can now get better, faster and longer lasting results with disc issues than before. This therapy is so incredible that we have dedicated an entire page towards educating you about it.
